What is the Kidney Paired Donation Program?
Kidney paired donation is a program that matches transplant candidates with living donors. It gives people the chance to become a living kidney donor while ensuring that someone they want to help receives a needed kidney, even if they are not a direct match.
Can I Change My Mind After I Have Agreed?
Yes, you can change your mind at any time during the process, and your decision will be respected by the health care team. They’ll also help you communicate your decision to the potential recipient.
How Long Does it Take a Donor to Recover?
After donating a kidney, people will generally require a hospital stay of 1 to 3 days. Most people are able to completely return to their normal daily activities after 4 to 6 weeks.
What Kind of Psychological Impacts are there?
Most donors have a feeling of happiness and satisfaction because the transplant patients have much better health after the transplant. Some donors will experience anger if the transplant patient’s body rejects the organ; or a feeling of sadness/regret for donating their kidney.
Does Being a Donor Affect Life Expectancy?
Living donation does not change life expectancy, and does not appear to increase the risk of kidney failure. In general, most people with a single normal kidney have few or no problems.
Are there Economic Impacts When Donating a Kidney?
There are some expenses associated with donating a kidney, including travel costs, meals, and accommodations. Fortunately there is a program available to help reimburse potential donors for these expenses called PRELOD.
